ELDON Calvert, the reputed head of the deadly Stone Crusher gang, yesterday began his bid for freedom in the Home Circuit Court following his acquittal last week of murder.

The legal team representing Calvert and co-accused Orrette Grant started the bail application before Justice Gloria Smith. But the matter was adjourned to continue later this month.

Both men are charged with the November 2006 murder of Artley Campbell, a resident of Salt Spring, St James.

It is believed that Campbell was murdered because he witnessed the killing of his friend Robert Green.

Last Friday Calvert, his brother Gleason Calvert, and Michael Heron were freed of a charge of murder in the Home Circuit Court after it was discovered that the investigating officer in the case had fabricated a witness statement. They were being tried for Green’s murder.

The investigating officer, Sergeant Michael Sirjue, reportedly fled the island last Thursday. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn has recommended that Sirjue be charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and uttering false document.

Sirjue is accused of writing a witness statement implicating the Calverts and Heron and signed it as coming from Campbell. Campbell never gave a statement. In fact that statement was written and signed a day after Campbell was also murdered.

The statement was turned over to the defence, which in turn submitted it to handwriting expert Beverly East after noticing the oddly shaped zero on the date affixed by Sirjue.
