KINGSTON, Jamaica — Newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Portland Eastern Ann Marie Vaz was sworn in a short while ago during the sitting of the House of Representatives.

Vaz was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Andrew Holness as well as other Members of Parliament on both sides of the House.

Vaz won the April 4 by-election against the Opposition People's National Party (PNP) candidate Senator Damion Crawford, defeating him by 319 votes (9,989 to 9,670) .

The seat became vacant following the death of PNP MP Dr Lynvale Bloomfield who was killed in February.

Vaz will now be the 17th woman in the current Parliament, and the second to sit with her husband at the same time in Gordon House.
