KINGSTON, Jamaica – Australia beat South Africa by eight wickets in a Group 2 Super Eights match of the ICC World Twenty20 at the Premedasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday
Leg-spinner Xavier Doherty chipped in with figures of three for 20 to help Australia restrict South Africa to a modest 146 for five.
Doherty was supported by Shane Watson, who finished with figures of two for 29 including the important wickets of Hashim Amla (17) and South Africa skipper A B de Villiers (21).
Robin Peterson top-scored for South Africa with a rapid 32 off 19 balls, while Farhaan Behardien (31) and J P Dunimy (30) also made useful contributions.
In Australia’s inning Watson dominated the proceedings as the boys from Down Under sailed home by 8 wickets with 14 balls to spare.
In-form Watson picked his spots as he rushed to 70 in 47 balls.
Michael Hussey, who came after the fall of David Warner, was his usual self as he played the supporter's innings to perfection with a 37-ball 45.
Australia made 147 for 2.
Australia are now comfortably looking at a semi-final berth, while South Africa will be hoping that India beat Pakistan in Sunday’s other game to keep the Proteas-dream alive.
