THE Blue Lagoon in Portland is to be declared a National Monument, following Cabinet’s approval of the move under the provisions of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust Act.

Minister with responsibility for the Public Service and Information Arthur Williams, made the announcement during Wednesday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House in Kingston.

He said the designation will regulate the use of pollutants and motorised equipment in the designated area around the lagoon, as well as prohibit dredging and other activities that may be adverse to the ecology of the area.

"Accordingly, because it will take some time, Cabinet has approved the introduction of a preservation notice for a period of six months to allow the National Heritage Trust to do all that is necessary to declare it a national monument,” he said.
