FORMER Prime Minister Bruce Golding and Minister with responsibility for Information, Sandrea Falconer, have paid tribute to the works of veteran journalist Wilmot 'Mutty' Perkins.

Perkins passed away at his home this morning after a short illness. He was 80 years old.

Golding, in extending condolences to his wife and family, hail Perkins as the 'defender of the poor' and praised his fearlessness, brilliant mind and sharp analytical skills.

"Mutty was the people’s defender but he defended them without patronizing them or giving in to populism. He opened the minds of many people to a process of reasoning that does not come naturally but which is the only route to real understanding," Golding said in a release to the media.

Falconer was also full of praise for Perkins who she hailed as 'supreme'.

“Despite his incisive thoughts about leaders, he was still a simple man who could laugh with and express genuine sorrow with his callers from all walks of life who shared their stories with him on a daily basis. We extend our condolences to his widow of 56 years and broadcast practitioner, Elaine Perkins, his family and close friends,” Falconer said.
