KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Library Service (JLS) is set to receive some 400 computers, UPS units and application software, to improve the efficiency of its information technology systems.

Information minister Senator Sandrea Falconer said that Cabinet approved a contract to Management Service Systems for them to supply 400 computer systems, 400 licences of Microsoft Office 2012, 400 licences of Norton Anti-virus, and 400 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units to the JLS.

Falconer was speaking Wednesday (September 19), during the Jamaica House press briefing at Jamaica House.

The minister said Cabinet has recommended that investigations be carried out to ascertain if local expertise is available to put together the information technology systems at lower costs. 

Cabinet also suggested that the JLS collaborates further with the Universal Service Fund with a view to driving down the costs.

The JLS is also to investigate whether savings could be derived through existing government agreements through Microsoft for the use of their software.
