City air quality at acceptable standards – ODPEM

Sunday, February 12, 2012

THE National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) have confirmed that the ambient air quality readings taken at the Cross Roads, Marcus Garvey Drive and Petrojam stations remained well within the acceptable standards which are measured for a 24-hour period daily.

The air quality was measured from February 6 to 9 at the peak of the fire at the Riverton dump.

The fire is still resulting in plumes of foul smelling smoke settling over communities near the dump.

But ODPEM says readings for noxious gases, that is nitrogen and sulphur, remain negligible.

It was noted, however, that there was a spike in the ambient air quality for approximately one hour on February 7 at the peak of the fire, ODPEM said. But despite the spike all indications revealed that the air quality within the affected areas remained well within acceptable levels for the period, the agency said.

“It must be noted, however, that persons with respiratory illnesses would experience some discomfort as a result of the smoke nuisance during that time frame,” ODPEM said.

The ODPEM, NEPA, the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the Ministry of Health, National Works Agency, National Water Commission, the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the Jamaica Defence Force, the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Ministry of Education continue to monitor the situation and further updates will be given.
