Closure of section of the Palisadoes main road suspended
Wednesday, February 08, 2012
THE National Works Agency (NWA) has suspended plans to close a section of the northbound lane along the Palisadoes roadway in Kingston.
The closure was to be effective today for three months, as part of the US$65 million effort to rehabilitate and protect the Palisadoes shoreline.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said the suspension has come about, as the Agency was dissatisfied with the safety arrangements that have been made by the contractor.
Shaw said an inspection late yesterday evening, revealed that critical safety measures had not been implemented as instructed and this informed the NWA’s decision to abort the plans. He said the planned traffic diversion will be implemented as soon as the contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company Limited, completes all the safety measures that have been instructed by the NWA.
When implemented, the detour will span a distance of approximately 1.3 kilometres, heading from the direction of the airport, ending at approximately three kilometres from the Harbour View Round-About, where traffic will then be redirected onto the pre-existing roadway.
Motorists travelling from the direction of the Harbour View Round-About, towards the airport, will travel in the far right lane, for the distance of the diversion.
