KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People's National Party (PNP) today noted with sadness the passing of Chairman of the United States House of Representatives Oversight Committee, ranking Congressman Elijah Cummings.

“We express sincere condolences to the Cummings' family, the Government, and people ofThe United States,” the PNP said in a statement.

“Congressman Cummings has been at the forefront of the civil rights movement and in his capacity as a member of the Congressional Black Caucus gave support to Jamaica's efforts in our negotiations with the International Monetary Fund in our quest to reposition Jamaica's economy,” the PNP said.

PNP pointed out that Cummings stood for the rights of oppressed people in his own country and elsewhere.

“For many, he was a strong voice for the voiceless in Washington and a selfless leader who was not afraid to confront injustice at any level. We offer best wishes to his immediate family and the American people in this moment of grief,” PNP said.
