THE conviction on corruption charges of a former Sierra Leone government minister should serve as a warning to Jamaica, believes Contractor General Greg Christie.

Christie this morning took what he said was the unprecedented step of forwarding a web link to a breaking news story, about the conviction of former Sierra Leone health minister Sheiku Tejan Koroma, emailed to him by his anti-corruption counterparts in that country.

"The news story, which I am sure, will speak eloquently for itself, should be reflected upon by all of us who have a role to play in rescuing our fair country from the scourge of corruption which is now literally strangling Jamaica to death," he said.

Given that the conviction was related to procurement, the Contractor-General said that it had significance due to "similar issues with which we are currently faced here in Jamaica, particularly as they relate to matters which have to do with Public Procurement and Government Contracting and the abuse of office on the part of those in whom the Jamaican Taxpayer has reposed his/her confidence."

"It will also speak to the fact that no one, including even Ministers of Government, are considered to be above the law."
