KINGSTON, Jamaica - Residents of the upscale Cherry Gardens community in St Andrew are concerned about a spate of robberies occurring in the once quiet area.

"In the past two to three months robbers have carried out at-least five attacks against unsuspecting citizens," president of the Cherry Gardens Citizen Association Ruel Gibson told the Observer.

He was speaking at the Cherry Gardens’ Citizen Association monthly executive meeting held on Tuesday.

"To clamp down on this problem members of the Citizen Association have been working closely with the police which have stepped up their presence in the community," said Gibson.

The Association president said that the efforts of the police have  resulted in a reduction in the almost weekly attacks.

However despite the improvement citizens would not “fall into a false sense of security” and would be rolling out a number of initiatives, Gibson said at the meeting.

In the meantime the Association on Tuesday made cash donations to the Maxfield Park Children’s Home, the Missionaries of the Poor and the Elim Basic School.

"The donations are part of efforts of the association members to reach out to the community and people in neighbouring areas," said Julie Burgher, Treasurer of the Citizen Association.

Burger said that the donation was raised from several fund raising activities and added that the three organisations were selected from a list of several entities.
