ST JAMES, Jamaica — The WPM Waste Management Limited says there was a fire at the Retirement Disposal Site in St James this morning.

In a statement a short while ago, the company said it is believed that the fire started about midnight at the tipping phase of the facility.

Members of the St James Fire Department are currently on location trying to extinguish the blaze. Tractors are also on site spreading topsoil to contain the smoke, the company said.

WPM Waste Management also assured that all efforts are being made to fully extinguish the fire and dissipate the smoke.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
