Gayle’s RCB remain in IPL playoff contention
BANGALORE, India (CMC) - Chris Gayle’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) remained in contention for play-off berth beating Chennai Super Kings by 24 runs in their final league game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday.
Gayle hit four sixes in a knock of 28 before he was caught by Mike Hussey of a delivery from his West Indian counterpart Dwayne Bravo.
But it was a blistering 29-ball-56 from skipper Virat Kohli, who opened the batting, that set the stage as RCB posted 106 for two in only eight overs in a match curtailed by rain and then restricted CSK to 82 for six.
RCB finished their league engagements with 18 points and will now hope Darren Sammy’s Hyderabad Sunrisers lose to Sunil Narine’s Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday to ensure their passage in play-offs by virtue of better net run-rate.
Meantime, Kieron Pollard’s Mumbai Indians, who have already qualified for the playoffs, lost by 50 runs to Kings X1 Punjab in Dharamsala.
Pollard picked up a wicket for 22 runs from two overs and scored 22 which including a six and a four as Mumbai were bowled out for 133 in 19.1 overs.
Punjab, already out of contention for play-off berth, had recovered from a disastrous start to post 183 for eight.
