Gayle’s injury to be assessed

Wednesday, February 06, 2013 | 9:28 PM

CANBERRA, Australia (CMC) –A scan is to be carried out on West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle on Thursday to determine the extent of an injury sustained during the third One Day international against Australia Wednesday.

Gayle suffered a side strain while fielding during Australia's innings of 329 for seven in 50 overs at Manuka Oval.

He bowled five overs and picked up a wicket while conceding 36 runs but spent some time off the field and had to bat at number five, instead of opening the batting.

“Chris will have scans in Canberra on Thursday morning. At that time we will know the full extent of injury,” team media relations manager Philip Spooner told CMC Sports.

“He will travel to Sydney with the squad on Thursday afternoon. We hope to have him fit for Friday’s fourth ODI at the SCG”.

West Indies lost the five match series after falling to a 39-run defeat to Australia in the third ODI, following defeats in the first two.

Gayle, who appeared to be grimacing during his brief innings, was bowled for two as he attempted to flick James Faulkner to the leg side.
