KINGSTON, Jamaica — Cabinet has approved a US$18 million ($1.6 billion) contract with Kier Construction Limited to rehabilitate Kingston’s water supply system.

Twenty-six facilities that supply water to Kingston and St Andrew are scheduled for attention under the upgrading arrangement

Some of the works to be undertaken include the replacement of the existing pumping equipment with new pumps and motors to satisfy the current and projected water demands for the water supply systems; the replacement of existing well pumping equipment with new pumps and motors; and the upgrading of inadequate water supply transmission lines, Senator Sandrea Falconer said at the Jamaica House press briefing Wednesday.

Other works include the installation of chlorination facilities, controls and safety equipment to treat raw well water and the rehabilitation of the existing reservoirs, including those Montgomery Corner and Chancery Hall.

The project is funded by the Government is funding the project with assistance from the Inter-American Development Bank.
