VIDEO: Help on the way for Duke Street squatters — McKenzie

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Member of Parliament for West Kingston, Desmond McKenzie has promised that help is on the way for more than 60 people who were left without a home after being evicted from premises on Duke Street last week.

According to McKenzie, organisations that have come on board to help include Food for the Poor, several church groups and political representatives.

McKenzie said Food for Poor has taken the names of the victims with a view to providing housing solutions for them.

"As we speak, discussions have already begun among representatives from the various organisations to provide whatever assistance that can be provided," said McKenzie.

Last week several shacks and makeshift dwellings were demolished and the squatters removed by a bailiff and police team.

The squatters had been on the land for decades, however, the owner used the courts to reclaim the property.
