KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Meteorological (Met) Service of Jamaica has advised that Hurricane Chris, currently heading towards Canada’s Newfoundland, is not a threat to the island and is expected to weaken in coming days.

The Met Service said Chris is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone later today.

“On the forecast track, the centre of Chris will pass over or near extreme south-eastern Newfoundland later today or tonight,” said the Met Service in an advisory today.
It added that the hurricane’s exact location is currently near latitude 42.1 degrees North, longitude 60.1 degrees West.

Chris is moving toward the northeast near 35 mph or 56 km/h, and this general motion is expected to continue during the next 2 to 3 days.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 70 mph or 110 km/h with higher gusts, Met Service said, adding that it will continue to monitor this weather system.

Chris on Tuesday became the second hurricane of this year's Atlantic season.

Last year was especially devastating with hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria tearing deadly paths through the Caribbean and south-eastern United States.
