KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will stage a series of activities in honour of the late Louise Bennett-Coverley this month.

The activities, which will roll out across the island next week, will celebrate the life and work of the late cultural icon, affectionately called ‘Miss Lou’ Director of Field Services, at the JCDC, Marjorie Leyden-Vernon said.

“We are looking at a series of activities in almost every parish. We will commence on September 13 and go right through to the 29th,” she said, adding that details of the events and venues will be published in the press.

The JCDC official said that it would be working closely with schools, libraries and parish councils to carry out the activities.

“ We are working closely with the parish librarians and exhibitions are a part of what is being done to highlight the work and life of Miss Lou,” she said.

The celebrations will culminate on Saturday, September 29 when the JCDC, in collaboration with the Gordon Town community, will host a special event in the St Andrew community, were Miss Lou resided.

The event, dubbed: ‘Tenky Miss Lou family fun day and concert’, will be held at the Gordon Town Square, starting at 10:00 am.

Miss Lou was born in Kingston on September 7, 1919. She passed away in Toronto, Canada on July 26, 2006. This year, she would have celebrated her 93rd birthday.
