JUTC withdraws August Town service after shooting

Thursday, February 08, 2018

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has temporarily discontinued service to August Town in St Andrew following the killing of an individual and the injuring of two others this afternoon.

The State-run bus company took to social media to inform commuters that as a result of the shooting, which took place in the vicinity of Bryce Hill in August Town, its buses will terminate in Papine.

Routes affected are -- 72, 77 and 78.

When contacted, the police's Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) confirmed the incident but was unable to prove any further details. It however said the incident took place around 3:30 pm.

The bus company said that once given the clear by the police they will resume operations.

There has been an upsurge in violence in the area in recent weeks, which the police have blamed on the release of former gangsters from prison who want to retake control of the area.

A curfew was imposed on the community between January 27 and 28 as the recent murders there have heightened fear among residents who are contemplating whether or not they should leave.
