BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — A 40-year-old Jamaican man was jailed for 12 months after he failed to pay a fine of BS$4,000 (US$2,000) on drug related charges.

Deorian Orlando Duhaney pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking cannabis, and importation of cannabis.

The court heard that the Jamaican had arrived here on January 26 from Kingston, via Trinidad and after clearing immigration he was interviewed by police and then referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he passed out 47 taped packages containing cannabis.

The drugs weighed 0.5 pounds with an estimated street value of B$2,000.

Duhaney was fined B$4,000 forthwith or 12 months in prison for trafficking. The fine was not paid.

He was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the remaining offences.
