THE Cobolt radiology machine at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) which has been out of operation for the past six months will be up and running come next week.

This information was revealed by Dr Collie Miller, chief medical physicist in the radiology/radiotherapy department at the Kingston Public Hospital and later confirmed by health minister Dr Fenton Ferguson after a tour of the institution this morning.

According to Ferguson, attacking the problem of the lack of the radiology machine which is critical for cancer treatment, was tops on his list of things to do.

“We were able to negotiate to get the parts for Cobolt and I am now happy to announce that the source came in last week and within two weeks we should have the machine up and running,” Ferguson said.

Miller said technicians from overseas will be coming in on Monday do the installation.

He said the job should take two days for completion and so the machine should be ready by mid-week and the institution should start treating patients then.

Miller also explained that the hospital had stopped seeing cancer patients for radiation for the past six weeks.
