KINGSTON, Jamaica — Solomon Gardner, affectionately known as the Keeper of the Mill, Half Moon's Sugar Mill restaurant manager since 1974 and most recently restaurant ambassador, passed on today. Gardner had been ailing for some time.

A recipient of the Jamaica Observer Food Awards' Chairman's Award in 2013, and heralded as one of the Magnificent 7, Gardner's name was synonymous with outstanding service and his nightly greeting: “Welcome to the Sugar Mill Restaurant. My name is Solomon.”

Sandro Fabris, general manager of the famed Half Moon Resort, described Gardner's passing as one of deep sadness. “Losing a fine soul such as Solomon Gardner has left his Half Moon family in deep sadness. A Half Moon icon, he was known for his impeccable work ethic, dedication to his job, mentorship and commitment to his team.

"Gardner was a remarkable person who had such a positive and memorable impact on everyone he met. "He has been a member of our family for 53 years and we will miss him.”
