Labour Day projects continue

Jamaica Observer

Monday, May 24, 2010

SEVERAL Labour Day projects went on as planned in the Corporate Area this morning, even as sporadic bouts of unrest occurred in sections of Kingston and St Andrew.

Persons living near East and East Queens Street in downtown Kingston carried out projects undeterred, painting roads and pedestrian crossings.

At Highholborn Street, residents were clearing land, readying the area for a children's park with all the amenities.

In Kingston Gardens, people were seen cutting foliage from sidewalks

“No sah we not affected by di violence here so we carry on Labour Day work same way,” said one man who was seen painting on East Street.

This morning, the People’s National Party (PNP) issued a news release, imploring persons in the Corporate Area to abandon their Labour Day projects, citing the unstable security situation in Kingston.

“At this time, personal security is paramount and all steps should be taken to ensure this,” the PNP said.

“Additionally the security forces are already fully stretched trying to maintain law and order and as such no further burden should be placed on them.

“The planned activities for today can and will be undertaken at a later date.”
