KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man, who was arrested for demanding $5000 from another for the return of a Blackberry phone, was sentenced to nine months in prison Friday.
Clifford Walcott was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on charges of extortion and simple larceny following an allegation that he took the complainant's phone and tried to extort $5000 from him for its return.
Walcott denied the allegation.
According to him he found the phone one his way to work and agreed to return it to the owner who had contacted him and asked him how much compensation he wanted.
“A him call me and say how much you want and me say you can gi me $5000,” Walcott told the court.
Walcott said he made arrangements to meet the complainant but when he got to the location three policemen held onto him and asked him why he was charging their friend for his phone.
“If him di say gi me even $1000 me wud a still gi him de phone,” Walcott added.
However, Magistrate Judith Pusey was not convinced and sentenced him to nine months on both charges. The sentences are to run concurrent.
