Man of unsound mind fatally shot after hacking mother, nephew to death

TRELAWNY, Jamaica — A man said to be of unsound mind who used a machete to hack his motherand five-year-old nephew to death was subsequently shot dead after he reportedly attacked the police with the same weapon in Martha Brae,Trelawny last night.

The deceased have been identified as 56-year-old domestic helperEsmerelda Gordon, her son 28-year-old labourerLeon WhiteandLevon Walker, 5, all of a Martha Brae, Trelawny address.

According to a police source, about 11:30 pm residents heard screams coming from a house, occupied by the three in the old Trelawny capital.

The police were summoned and upon entering the house they reportedly came under attack from the machete-wielding White. It is said that the cops took defensive action and opened fire, hitting the machete wielder.

A resident of Martha Brae told the OBSERVER ONLINE that White had waved his machete at motorist driving by earlier in the evening.

The Independent commission of Investigation has commenced their investigation into the matter.
