VIDEO: Education ministry orders schools near Riverton dump closed

THE Ministry of Education, acting on the advice of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emegency Management (ODPEM) has ordered all schools close to the the Riverton City Landfill closed for today.

Below is the list of schools:

Hydel Group of Schools

Duhaney Park  Primary

George Headley Primary

Edith Dalton – James High

Drews Avenue Primary

Pembroke Hall Primary and Junior High

Penwood High

Seaward Avenue Primary

Seaview Primary

Balcombe Drive Primary

Marverly Primary and Junior High

Balmagie Primary

St. Patrick Primary

St Judes Primary

Cockburn Gardens Primary and Junior High

Dupont Primary

Tavares Gardens Primary and Junior High

Haile Selassie High

St Peter Claver; and

All the Early Childhood Institutions in the vicinity

       Region 6

South Borough Primary

Waterford High

Cumberland High

Portsmouth Primary

Gregory Park Primary

The ministry said its Regional Officers are following up directly with the affected schools in order to secure the safety of all students.

All parents of children that attend these schools are advised to pick up their children immediately. The Ministry is also asking parents to take the necessary  action to protect themselves and their children to protect themselves until the fire and associated smoke from the landfill is brought under control by the emergency teams engaged by the National Solid Waste Management (NSWMA).

It is expected that normalcy will be restored over the weekend and schools will reopen on Monday.
