KINGSTON, Jamaica — Ninety-six students were awarded scholarships by government and the private sector resulting from their performance in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) this year, an increase from the 65 students awarded last year and 82 awarded in 2010.

The list of scholarship winners from the Ministry of Education was published in the newspapers today.

Receiving the Scotiabank Foundation Shining Star Excellence Top Girl and Top Boy awards are Catherine Douse of St Catherine Preparatory and Chevaugn Campbell of Vaz Preparatory respectively.

In September Douse will attend St Jago High School while Campbell will go to Campion College.

As has been the norm in recent years, Campion was the school of choice for more scholarship winners than any other school. This year 41 students on the list will attend Campion, up from 33 last year.

Of the 25 government scholars announced, 19 will be going to Campion.

Although students from independent (preparatory) schools again dominated the government scholarships, the primary schools did better this year compared to last year. Six of the 25 government scholars are from primary schools, compared to only one out of 24 last year.

Schools receiving more than two scholarships included Hillel Academy (five) and St Catherine Prep, Vaz Prep, Stella Maris Prep, and St Richard’s Primary (three each).

In addition to Scotiabank, scholarships were named for a number of companies and products including Jamaica National, Tang, Petrojam, Guardian Life, Horlicks (for PATH recipients), Gas Pro, Sagicor and Jamaica Energy Partners.
