NSWMA wants help with dump fire
Thursday, February 09, 2012
THE National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says it’s seeking the assistance of persons with D9, D10 and D11 heavy-duty equipment and water trucks to assist with efforts to out a fire at the Riverton City dump.
The fire, which has been raging since Monday, has blanketed much of the city with foul smelling smoke.
NSWMA says the agency, along with its fire fighting partners, “worked assiduously throughout the night in an attempt to return the dump to normal operations”.
Now, it’s asking truck owners to call 480-5329, 447-1039 or 386-1080 if they can help.
In addition, they may report to the dump.
Meanwhile, the NSWMA is urging motorists travelling on the Mandela Highway, Spanish Town Road and the Portmore Leg of Highway 2000 to exercise caution, and residents in the immediate and surrounding communities are urged to take all the necessary precautions to minimise the effects that the smoke may have on them.
“We regret the inconvenience that this fire and smoke may cause to persons, and will provide timely updates as we work to bring the situation under control,” NSWMA said in a news release today.
