No room for complacency on Riverton — JET

Monday, February 13, 2012

THE Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) says though the Riverton fire is now under control, there is no room for complacency.

JET warns that dump fires can flare again, and is reminding Jamaicans that many pollutants are not visible to the naked eye, and the remaining smoke itself remains very harmful.

The group says it has been receiving many telephone calls from people located all over Kingston, complaining of respiratory distress.

The group says although it has noted the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management's statement that ambient air quality tests show acceptable air quality, it is calling on the authorities to reveal full details of these tests — when and where they were taken — and which air quality parameters are being tested.

Meanwhile, JET is calling for the closure and relocation of the dump and the institution of managed interim measures to deal with the nation’s solid waste.
