KINGSTON, Jamaica – Opposition Leader Andrew Holness told a special joint sitting of the Houses of Parliament this morning that he would rather have the building of schools than prisons, in response to the United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron’s announcement that a penal institution will be built here for Jamaicans imprisoned in Britain to complete their sentences.

Many OBSERVER ONLINE readers were in agreement with Holness’ statement.

Xedos said:  “So the communist are suppose to be the evil people. The Chinese build highway, Cuba build colleges and high school, the (former) slave masters return to build prison. Smh.”

Barrett Tan Tan said: Since Portia agree fi dem import prisoners and build world class prison, I hope she begs the Japanese PM visiting today to supply us with the rice and sushi fi feed dem… ‘cause I refuse to think a Jamaican taxpayer money ago fatten dem foreigners.”

And Kiva Jones said, “Better schools mean LESS is #1.”

One dissenter, Devon, said that schools would be a good alternative but believes that that is the responsibility of the Government.

“Schools would be nice, but that's for the Jamaican Government to take care of. Jamaica needs that prison, I do understand those deported didn't commit their crimes in Jamaica, but they're (an) embarrassment to Jamaica. Jamaica needs help securing the border and air space. That's another area the government should've asked for help,” he said.

Mel alwayz doing well in response to Devon’s comment said: “Jamaica needs that prison really? So you are telling me that Jamaicans should foot the bill for keeping these criminals imprisoned for the sentences imposed upon them by the British judicial system from crimes committed in Britain?

Josephcoat said: “Crime is out of control and the PNP (People’s National Party) seems to be out of strategic approach to crime fighting. So the best thing now is for PSM (Portia Simpson Miller) to hug up the prison gift. smh

“Has everyone forgotten just last month it was front page news that we need a new prison facility but as usual there is no money for it? Now we are being offered aid to build a prison where the minority residents will be from the UK prisons,” said Djoney.

“If momma P care so much about children and education, why isn't she setting aside money to build schools? Oh right, silly me, there is no money to build anything. And the proud country of Jamaica has to rely on handouts.

“Beggars can’t be choosers. Except in Jamaica, apparently,” Djoney continued.

Another dissenter, Big tj, had this to say: “Andrew completely missed the point of this "assistance". The UK is trying to help themselves cut their prison bill; how would building roads and schools in Ja assist the UK in what they are trying to achieve?”
