SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — Over 300 assorted rounds used mostly in high powered rifles were recovered by the Westmoreland police Thursday afternoon as they increased their drive to curtail major crime in the parish.

"Over the last couple of weeks the Westmoreland police have intensified its operation in the division in a bid to reduce the frequency of major crime and to further disrupt the activity of some major gangs operating in the division," Deputy Superintendent of Police Winston Milton, in charge of operations in the Westmoreland police division told the Jamaica Observer.

According to Milton, during an operation conducted by the Street Crime Unit in the Gully Bank community in the parish about 3:45pm yesterday a large black plastic bag containing some 313 assorted rounds and one AK magazine was found hidden under trash at an abandoned premises.

The ammunition include 103 rounds 7.62 mm cartridges, used in AK 47 rifles; thirty-nine 5.56 mm cartridges used in M16 rifles; 168 .22 cartridges and three .38 cartridges.

No one was arrested in connection with the find.

Meanwhile, DSP Milton pledged to sustain the campaign to eradicate major crime in the parish.

"We will continue on this operation with an aim of reducing the figures of major crime in the parish," DSP Milton promised.
