Over $2m worth of ganja, cocaine seized in narcotics operations

WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — The Narcotics Police yesterday seized drugs worth more than $2 million in separate operations.

According to police reports, the first seizure occurred during an operation in McAlpine in Whitehouse, Westmoreland about 2:30 pm. The lawmen said a hut was searched and approximately 80 pounds of ganja was seized. The drug has an estimated street value of J$300,000.

Police said no one was arrested in connection with the seizure.

Later, around 5:00 pm another operation was carried out on Kensington Crescent, St Andrew. During that operation, loose ganja weighing approximately 196 pounds and cocaine weighing approximately one kilogram were seized, the police reported.

Detectives estimated that the ganja would have fetched approximately J$776,000 if sold on the streets, while the cocaine has an estimated street value of J$1.1 million.

Police said one man was arrested in connection with the seizure; however his identity is being withheld at this time.

The investigation into both cases continues.
