THE Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) has expressed labelled the current state of affairs at the Riverton City Dump, which is now burning and emitting toxic smoke, affecting the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of Jamaicans living and working in the immediate area and in other parts of the city, a national disgrace.  

In a release to the media the organisation said it was in solidarity with the Jamaican Environment Trust (JET) that the situation that has persisted for decades is untenable and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) and other regulatory bodies responsible for the environment and public health must be held accountable for their collective failure to address the issues.

"At a time when the country can least afford it, many businesses operating in the vicinity of the Dump have been forced to close or curtail their operations, losing valuable productive time and earnings," the release stated.

The PSOJ echoed JET's call on the Government to:

• Act speedily and decisively to safeguard the health and well-being of citizens living and working in the vicinity of the dump; 

• Immediately develop alternative and sustainable strategies for dealing with Kingston’s solid waste;

• Prioritise the start of the waste to energy project which has been tendered; and

• Launch a national re-cycling and collection programme for container waste and plastics.
