Portmore mourns murdered policeman

Murder may be linked to foiled homicide last year

RELATIVES and colleagues of slain Special Corporal Garfield Anderson this morning congregated inside his Westchester home in  Portmore, St Catherine, praying for strength to cope with his murder.

Except for a sobbing Karlene Webb, the mother of Anderson's 11-month old baby, all his bereaved loved ones declined to speak with the media.

"It's really sad, for everybody," said Webb, staring at nothing in particular with tears streaming down her cheek.

The last time I spoke to him was yesterday morning. Now he's gone," she added.

Anderson's death irated two female colleagues from the Island Special Constabulary Force, who turned up to lend support to his family.

"It just makes me angry to see what is happening in the country, because we've buried at least three of our officers in the last three weeks," said one.

About 9:30 pm, Anderson was in climbing off his bicycle at a shop on Westchester Drive, in Greater Portmore when he was attacked by gunmen who shot and killed him, police said.

This morning residents speculated whether or not his killing may be linked to his foiling a murder attempt in the community about a year ago.

In that incident, Anderson allegedly shot an attacker in the mouth, residents said.
