KINGSTON, Jamaica—Fifty per cent of respondents to the OBSERVER ONLINE’s poll on economic prospects are optimistic that their financial fortunes will improve this year.

The 50/50 split comes after 3,384 responses to the question “Do you think your financial situation will improve in 2014?"

2013 was undoubtedly a tough year for many Jamaicans as the exchange rate shot through the roof, closing at approximately $106 Jamaican to $1US at the end of the year pushing up consumer prices.

However, according to reports the economy recorded a modest gain of 0.5 per cent during the September quarter, the first period of growth after seven quarters.
