Weekly Round-up: Cops duped?... Back-to-school shoppers warned... Four J'cans win at Muller Grand Prix

Saturday, August 24, 2019

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Head of Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bishop Dr Gary Welsh came under heavy public scrutiny Tuesday for his decision to pardon the man who claimed he was the driver of a motorcar captured in a viral video recklessly stunt driving in St Andrew recently.

The confessed driver, Dennis Dietrih, who is the personal assistant of well-known cricketer Andre Russell, got off scot-free after only making a public apology required of him Tuesday.

However, another video surfaced on social media soon after, showing a partially hidden male of darker complexion in the driver's seat of the motorcar.

Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson has since ordered a further probe into the incident.

Meanwhile, The Consumer Affairs Commission in a report on Monday urged parents to be wary of counterfeit products and severely marked down items during back-to-school shopping.

In sports, Jamaica's defending World and Olympic champion Omar McLeod won the 110 metre hurdles at the Muller Grand Prix at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, England, on Sunday. He was one of four Jamaicans to win events at the meet — world leader Danielle Williams in the 100m hurdles, Yohan Blake in the men's 100m and 400m runner Akeem Bloomfield.
