KINGSTON, Jamaica— The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) said it shares the public's concern over the recent incident between a member of staff at the Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC) and the mother of a patient.

“While we understand the anxiety of patients who visit our health facilities, particularly the Bustamante Hospital for Children, the management of SERHA strongly opposes any form of abuse of the public health staff,” SERHA said in a statement.

According to the statement, SERHA is committed to providing invaluable medical care to all who seek treatment and care at its institutions.

SERHA noted that the BHC team is working assiduously to address the issues of increased patient load and resultant waiting time presently facing the hospital.

“The triage system at BHC is in place to ensure that medical cases are properly categorized and prioritised such that the appropriate resources are allocated to treat with the level of urgency,” the agency said.

It also reminded the public that the Accident & Emergency Department is geared towards treating emergency and urgent cases.

The statement said SERHA and the Ministry of Health & Wellness remain dedicated in maintaining a strong security process for the safety and security of patients and staff while serving the public at the highest standard of medical care.

The agency said the existing infrastructure will be used to support on-going investigations and further enhance the security elements where required to prevent a recurrence.

Last Sunday People's National Party councillor Kari Douglas was involved in an altercation with a member of staff at BHC, where she was seeking treatment for her child.
