Sandy reaches hurricane strength

KINGSTON, Jamaica - As conditions continue to deteriorate in Jamaica, Sandy has now been upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane.

Sandy is said to be moving at 14mph with maximum sustained winds of 70mph, becoming the season's 10th hurricane.

The centre of the system is now 50 miles south of Jamaica. The centre shows intense rain bands and is well defined,

Sandy’s centre will pass directly over Kingston.
