ST JAMES, Jamaica — Smoke emanating from a section of the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James caused authorities to restrict access to post-security departures for a short period this morning.

According to a statement, people in the vicinity of the area where smoke was detected were evacuated after the airport's protection system was activated about 10:30 am.

It said this was in keeping with the emergency response procedure.

The airport informed that its Emergency Response Service and Jamaica Fire Brigade conducted checks and a preliminary assessment revealed that the smoke originated from electrical wires in an area being demolished in the vicinity of the ticketing concourse.

Normal operations at the airport resumed within 30 minutes of the evacuation and there were no reports of any injuries to anyone present, the airport said.
