THE slow-moving Isaac, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, achieved hurricane status at approximately 12:20 pm Eastern today, the National Hurricane Centre said.
The Category 1 hurricane, positioned about 160 miles southeast of New Orleans, is moving northwest at 10 mph. Isaac is expected to make landfall late today or early tomorrow on Louisiana's Gulf Coast.
Tomorrow marks the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in late August 2005.
