Two cops found guilty of murder, manslaughter

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Two police officers, ConstablesChristobel Smith and Garrett Davis were found guilty for the offences of manslaughter and murder respectively in the Home Circuit Court on Thursday, November 14, the Jamaica Constabulary Force's (JCF)Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) has reported.

The guilty verdicts were in relation to the fatal shooting of Omar Marshall on October 9, 2008. The matter was investigated by the Internal Investigation Unit of the JCF, formerly Bureau of Special Investigations.

A file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutionwho responded on July 22, 2014 that both constables be charged with the offence of murder, the CCU said.

On Tuesday, October 22, 2019, the trial in the matter commenced where Constable Smith's charge of murder was reduced to the lesser charge of manslaughter. The trial was completed in November returning guilty verdicts of manslaughter against Smith and murder against Davis.

They are to reappear before Home Circuit Court on Monday, December 16, 2019, for sentencing, the CCU said.
