UN, Haiti police investigate death of UN officer
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — The United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Haiti says it is investigating the death of a Rwandan officer who served in the force's police unit. Early findings suggest his death was an accident.
The officer who died Wednesday in the town of Jeremie on Haiti's western coast is identified as Bisangwa Hassan. The 34-year-old was married and a father of two children. He joined the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti in December 2011.
The UN peacekeeping force arrived in 2004 following the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The UN says 172 people associated with the Haiti mission have died since then — 102 of them in the country's 2010 earthquake.
The UN announced the death Thursday but did not provide any details.
