KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Police High Command says lawmen were on site to maintain order at the New Year's event Sandz but had to call in reinforcement to assist with traffic, which came to a halt along the Palisadoes main road in Kingston last evening.

The congestion, which was a result of partygoers parking outside the designated areas, affected flights at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), as departures were delayed and passengers missed their flights.

Reports from the police are that the party 'Sandz' was being held at 7th Harbour Entertainment Complex when, shortly after 5:00 pm, a heavy influx of motorists started to arrive at the area.

However, several of them refused to co-operate with the police to use the designated parking area and the shuttle bus system that was provided for the event, resulting in traffic congestion.

According to the police, reinforcement was called in and the situation eventually brought under control after much effort by the response team.

The Police High Command said it regrets the inconveniences that resulted from the traffic congestion and is doing a review on the incident as they seek to put measures in place to prevent any such recurrence.
