LYON, France (AFP) — Governments, businesses and philanthropists pledged $13.92 billion Thursday to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, just short of the US$14 billion targeted, French President Emmanuel Macron announced.

Despite the shortfall, Macron told delegates in Lyon he had launched a fundraising drive with billionaire Bill Gates and he was "convinced" the deficit would be made up within weeks.

Organisers say US$14 billion would help save 16 million lives and avert 234 million infections by 2023.
