KINGSTON, Jamaica - Opposition MP Darryl Vaz Tuesday supported the Government’s decision to pull out of the fuel sourcing process and focus on a legislative and regulatory role energy framework role.

“It is obvious, based on what the Minister (Phillip Paulwell) announced today, that this is probably where we should have been from the start, in terms of it being a private sector led initiative,” Vaz told the House of Representatives Tuesday.

“I think we need to learn, as legislators... that there are some things that government must get involved in, and somethings they must not get involved in,” he added.

He suggested that the government should set the guidelines and regulate the industry, and leave the operation of the energy sector to private companies.

“This is what we should have been doing all these years, when we were spending the US$2.8 million with the committee and with all that we went through, was to see how best we could protect the consumer,” he stated.

“We are coming to a decision we should have come to a long time ago: Let the private sector do what they do best and we, as legislators, regulate and put in the oversight mechanisms to make sure the playing field is level,” he concluded.
