SARANSK, Russia — The World Cup 2018 Group C match betweenPeru and Denmark at the Mordovia Arena in Saransk remained goalless at halftime despite a penalty being awarded to Peru after theVideo Assistant Referee (VAR) system was used for the second time in history.

RefereeBakary Gassama from Gambia initially ruled against a foul on Peruvian midfielder Christian Cueva in the box, but then reversed his decision after consulting video replays. Cueva, however, blasted the spot-kick over the bar.

This was the second time in World Cup history that the VAR system was being used, after referee Andres Cunha from Uruguay did not award a spot-kick in the Group C match earlier in the day between France and Australia, but after viewing the VAR footage, ruled it was a penalty.

The second half is now underway.
