KINGSTON, Jamaica - West Indies gave a spirited performance in defending a modest 137 to take the World Cup T20 final restricting Sri Lanka to 101 Sunday in Colombo.

The home team got off to a flying start, after WI won the toss and chose to bat, taking the wicket of Johnson Charles in the first over without a run on the board.

Danger man Chris Gayle went LBW for three in the sixth over with WI on 14 for 2.

West Indies batting was restricted throughout the innings and was 48 for two after 12 overs, the only bright spark being Marlon Samuels.

Samuels rescued the WINDIES’ effort scoring 78 before being caught in the latter part of the innings.

WI then turned the tables on Sri Lanka taking wickets at regular intervals with the home team trying to push for runs as rain threatened.

In mid inning both teams were on even terms but the WI inched ahead as wickets fell.

"I think the first 10 overs were pretty decent, they knew they had to go for it and 3-4 bad overs shifted the momentum. The crowd was fantastic, we disappointed them but credit to West Indies, they played very well. Marlon Samuels played an outstanding knocks and hit some really good shots. We lost momentum when we lost Dilshan,” Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said in an interview with the BBC

"It has been a long time, the guys really fought tonight. Marlon Samuels has been brilliant for us, and we are world champions after so long," West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard commented.

Marlon Samuels was man of the match.
