SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — An alleged gang member who was facing a murder charge was reportedly shot and killed during a police operation at his home yesterday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old unemployed Joseph Wiliams, also called 'Joe Dog', formerly of Llandillo Housing Scheme, Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.
The police said a Glock 9mm pistol, loaded with two live rounds was taken from Williams’ body.
Williams, who was an alleged member of the Savanna-la-Mar based Hot Roses gang, was said to be on bail at the time of his death.
Police report that a joint police/military party went to Williams' house yesterday morning about 5:25 in search of illegal firearms.
Upon their arrival at the house occupied by Williams, the police knocked on the door and identified themselves. However, Williams reportedly responded but refused to open the door.
Williams alleged opened fire on members of the police/military team who forcibly gained entry into the house. The fire was returned and he was hit.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has commenced a probe into the matter.
