KINGSTON, Jamaica — Nine people from the island's creative industries were presented with Mediamix Doctor Bird Awards at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston last evening.

The awards, which were on a 13-year break, were first held in 1998.

Conceptualiser Lennie Little-White explained the importance of the awards.

"The nine people, you feel the love from them and that for me was very important. They felt a kind of appreciation, 'cause plenty of them do work and dem go to them grave and nobody never shake them hand," Little-White told the Observer Online.

The recipients were: Music – Gussie Clarke; Dance – L'Antoinette Stines; Fine Arts – Norma Rodney Harrack; Written Word – Mutabaruka; Architecture – Evan Williams; Theatre – Basil Dawkins; Film and Television – Natalie Thompson; Fashion – Bill Edwards; and Pan Media (Publishing) – Ian Randle.
