Peter Phillips is a growing disappointment

Dear Editor,With each passing press conference, in the deluge of those called by new People's National Party (PNP) President Dr Peter Phillips, he is disappointing me more and more. I am forced to recall Wilmot “Motty” Perkins' cheeky assignation of the abbreviation PhD — piled higher and deeper.

When Phillips was elevated to the post of party president, some of us held hope that he would lift the quality of national discourse and be a better intellectual match for Jamaica Labour Party leader Andrew Holness — sans PhD. He has, however, been a let-down.

First, he began spouting simplistic solutions to the nation's challenges and advocating land titles for the masses, as if ignorant of the policies and regulations governing landownership. Phillips somehow thought we would have forgotten that he was a senior member of the PNP's leadership team that held power for over 20 years. He had no solutions then; how is it that now he has all the answers?

After heavy rains over parts of the island at the end of April created flooding, he was on the airwaves questioning the effective use of the funds spent by the Government for de-bushing and drain-cleaning in November the previous year, over five months before. Is Phillips ignorant of the rampant littering that contributes to the blocked drains? Is he forgetting that grass and weeds grow back? Maybe because they are green he has closed his mind to that. Or is it that Dr Phillips and his PNP Comrades are ignorant of the concept of growth in whatever sphere, which is why the country experienced almost no growth with them at the wheel.

Now, I hear Dr Phillips suggesting that a joint select committee of Parliament should be set up, with politicians among the membership, to assess the national drainage network. Seriously?! Will Phillips stop at nothing to get his name in the press? What productive purpose would politicians serve meeting to analyse the drainage system of the country? I will use the dreaded cliché: What about the relevant authorities?

Peter Phillips is one disappointment after another. I know it is early days yet in his tenure at the helm of his party, but the hope invested in him by those wanting more for the country has been slaughtered at the microphone of opportunism.

I hear Motty's signature laugh from the grave and his alternate meaning of PhD — permanent head damage.
